Skills assessment is performed by our Evaluations Director. Please review the Club’s policy on Player Advancement.

 2.0 Skill Knowledge

Knows some of the basic rules such as two bounce rule and scoring
Demonstrates a forehand stroke
Demonstrates a backhand stroke
Demonstrates a volley
Demonstrates an overhead shot with some force
Gets some serves into the correct service square
Knows where to stand as the serve team and the return team
Has some mobility, moving in a safe and balanced manner
Watches the ball and may communicate with partner
 May try to hit some dinks
Knows to come up and play close to the NVZ
Consistency Goal: Hit 3 shots in a row without making an unforced error

2.5 Skill Knowledge

Knows some of the basic rules such as two bounce rule and scoring
Demonstrates some control of a forehand stroke
Demonstrates some control of a backhand stroke
Hitting forehand and backhand shots with force at times
Demonstrates a volley
Demonstrates an overhead shot with some force
Hits most serves into the correct service court, some deep and low
Knows correct court positioning as the serve and return team
Good mobility, moving in a safe and balanced manner
Watches the ball and may communicate with partner
Attempting to hit dink and/or lob shots
Approaches the NVZ line to hit volleys
Keeps the ball in play on short rallies
Starting to hit return of serves deep and within 2 feet of net
Consistency Goal: Hit 6 shots in a row without making an unforced error

 3.0 Skill Knowledge

Knows basic rules to include scoring
Demonstrates control of a forehand stroke (placement, direction, depth)
Demonstrates control of a backhand stroke (placement, direction, depth)
Demonstrates an overhead shot, some with force and placement
Hits serves into the correct service court, some deep and low
Demonstrates placement of serves
Serve team attempts to approach the NVZ with a slow paced drop shot (3 rd shot)
Attempts to hit return of serve deeper and higher to allow time to get to NVZ
Exhibits correct court positioning for doubles and how to move as a team
Good mobility, moving in a safe and balanced manner, but quicker
Watches the ball and communicates with partner
Attempts to sustain a dink exchange at the net
Attempts to hit some lob shots
Approaches the NVZ quickly rather than staying back
Keeps the ball in play on rallies
Avoids most balls going out of play
Some poaching, aggressive net play
Consistency Goal: Hit 10 shots in a row without making an unforced erro

3.5 Skill Knowledge

Variety of serves to include short, long and placement
Uses deeper and higher returns of serve to approach the net quicker
Able to hit soft / short return of serve when appropriate
Consistent forehand & backhand shots (direction, depth, placement & pace)
Consistent and dependable overhead shots (direction, depth, placement & pace)
Consistent and dependable volleys
Executes successful slow paced (3 rd shot) from baseline to approach net
Initiates and maintains a sustained dink exchange to elicit a “put away” shot
Able to change a slow paced strategy to a fast paced strategy, & vice versa
Can block and return fast, hard volleys
Can handle hard shots without overhitting or hitting outofbound                                                                                                                                  Moves effectively with partner, easily switching sides & communicates when
Controls play at the NVZ, keeping opponent back, driving them off the line
Consistently creates coverage gaps and hits to those gaps
Recognizes and exploits weaknesses in their opponent’s game
Poaches effectively
Developing the use of spin on a variety of shots
Avoids hitting most balls going out of play
Accuracy and use of lobs when appropriate
Exhibits patience during rallies
Has good mobility, to include quickness
Has good hand / eye coordination
Consistency Goal: Hit 30 shots in a row without making an unforced error
